Zuni, New Mexico, is a Reservation of the Zuni Tribe. They have very strict rules about not recording or photographing any of their religious ceremonies; they have it posted as you drive into town, even.
I grew up in Arizona around the Apache, and so I already know the rules. I did not see any ceremonies going on as I drove through. If I missed something though, I will take this down if brought to my attention.
I love detouring through this area for the feeling of freedom it gives me. There's no traffic and the highways are smooth.
Zuni itself has everything you need; there are several good restaurants and a grocery store in town. As well as some really cute gift shops to check out, especially if you like Southwestern/ Native American decor. You don't get much more authentic than here.
Be sure to gas up before continuing, as there are far fewer amenities on these highways. Cell service is also very spotty in this part of the state, even with Verizon.
I also recommend making sure to respect speed limits and any other requests in these Southwest desert towns. Tribes have their own legal systems, and they do things a bit differently sometimes. So, I mind my p's and q's.š
Finally, these areas are excruciatingly hot in the summer, where snakes and scorpions roam free, so again, make sure you know what you're doing before you come through here.
If properly prepared, though, this is some of the coolest stuff you'll ever see in our country.
